Workshop Overview<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This workshop will delve into Turkey-Gulf relations’ deepening and widening dynamics over the past decades. While the workshop\u2019s primary focus will be on geopolitics, foreign policy, and investments, the workshop will also touch upon cultural, educational, and other aspects that Turkey and Gulf states have established over the years.<\/p>\n

We will cover Turkey’s relations with all GCC members and aims to map the evolution of the relationship with each member state and the bloc as a whole. While Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia will take a significant place in this workshop due to their more active foreign policy, this workshop aims to present Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman’s relations with Turkey. In addition to encompassing the six members, the workshop seeks to diversify the GCC-Turkey ties as much as possible. While security and investment-related papers are welcome and might take a significant share of the whole workshop, this workshop aims to go beyond these two topics and include Turkey-GCC encounters in other issues, such as in international organizations, the war on Gaza, the U.S. role in the Middle East, and other soft and cultural policies.<\/p>\n

The recent war on Gaza tested the importance of both Turkey and GCC members in regional issues and also in U.S. behavior and policies in the Middle East. Therefore, Turkey-GCC relations must be studied bilaterally and in regional and global affairs. Additionally, the new U.S. administration (either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris) will significantly influence relations as Trump’s election in 2016 and defeat in 2020 have previously affected the relationship.<\/p>\n

The workshop addresses the evolving relationships and the issues shaping this evolution. By doing so, this workshop seeks to contribute to the theme of Gulf-Turkey relations policy, and contributors are expected to present issues related to foreign policy, defense, energy, economy, diplomacy, and security of the political relationship.<\/p>\n

Workshop papers can be published as an edited book with prestigious academic publishers like Routledge or Springer. Both chairs are currently involved in a similar project, provisionally accepted by Routledge, which examines Turkey-GCC relations.\u00a0Alternatively, the full text could be featured in a special issue of area studies or IR-focused journals such as Digest of Middle East Policy, Middle East Critique, Insight Turkey, or Third World Quarterly. For instance, Betul Dogan-Akkas and Hamdullah Baycar are co-editing a special issue on Gulf nationalism for Studies on Ethnicity and Nationalism.<\/p>\n

We invite contributions from a diverse academic spectrum to address, but not limit themselves to, the following topics:<\/p>\n
