China’s state-owned Shanghai SUS Environment Co. announced plans on Tuesday to develop clean energy facilities in the Iraqi provinces of Baghdad, Basra, and Nineveh. Ahmed al-Amin, the company’s regional director, told the Iraqi News Agency that the Baghdad project will process about 5,000 tons of waste per day to generate 110 megawatts of electricity, which will be connected to the national grid. He added that the project is expected to be ready for implementation by mid-2026. Shanghai SUS Environment was reportedly awarded a $497 million contract to build Iraq’s first waste-to-energy facility. The initiative forms part of the Iraqi government’s efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and expand renewable energy capacity.
