Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, announced Wednesday the launch of practical steps with General Electric (GE) to build high-efficiency power plants with a total capacity of 24,000 megawatts. In April, GE Vernova and the Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlining proposals for combined-cycle gas-fired plants of similar capacity. Backed by potential foreign financing, the MoU represents the largest and most comprehensive power agreement in Iraq’s history. It includes the construction of new facilities to expand generation and the maintenance and upgrade of existing infrastructure.
