Aramco CEO Amin Nasser announced on Monday that Aramco would begin the development of the largest shale gas development outside of the United States. Aramco hopes the plan will help boost domestic gas supply and end the burning of oil at its power generation plants. Saudi Aramco has been competing with the U.S. shale market for the past few years, ever since the U.S. revolutionized fracking techniques that allowed companies to pump oil from formations previously thought of as too costly. Aramco also announced that they had perfected a process that uses seawater instead of freshwater while fracking, an impediment that had eluded Saudi Arabia due to its lack of the latter.
