UAE Warns Washington It May Sell Oil in Chinese Yuan as Hormuz Closure Drains Dollar Liquidity
The UAE privately warned Washington that if the Hormuz closure continues to constrain dollar-denominated oil revenues, Abu Dhabi may be forced to begin settling some oil sales in Chinese Yuan. This was a warning delivered by the UAE Central Bank Governor, H.E. Khaled Balama, during high-level meetings in Washington. He also requested for a direct US dollar swap line. Despite holding $270 billion in foreign reserves, the UAE faces growing operational dollar liquidity risks as its primary revenue stream from oil exports remains disrupted. If Abu Dhabi follows through, it would represent the most significant challenge to the petrodollar system since its creation in the 1970’s.
